Local Radio station KRML focuses in on community
By:

Are you really driving through Carmel if your radio isn’t turned to 102.1 on KRML? Locally-owned and independent, KRML was voted the Best Radio Station by the Monterey County Weekly in 2019 and welcomes an impressive 50,000 listeners at any given time. With a mix of alternative rock, folk, and indie musicfeaturing both local and worldwide musicians this station has it all to keep locals tuned in.

Established in 1858, the radio station was originally dedicated to Jazz music and made popular after the release of Clint Eastwood’s film “Play Misty for Me” in 1971. However, formatting changed in 2012 when ownership transferred, according to Director of Sales and Marketing, Angie Arias. The “Adult Album Alternative” format that the station now uses allowed for a segway into the world of alternative.

“I think a lot of people have a loyalty to our station,” Arias explains. “Jazz is very different from our current format obviously, but I do think that a lot of listeners enjoy the new eclectic music that we play.”

KRML also draws listeners in with their wide array of specialty shows, with topics ranging from beer to sports to cannabis. Always with a fresh scoop and new perspective, the shows often feature community leaders or business owners.

Pub Talk is one of the most popular shows on KRML, which airs live on Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m at Peter B’s brewpub. Hosts welcome their listeners to come watch the segment live as they taste and discuss locally brewed beer.

The station is a pillar of the Carmel community, by advertising mom-and-pop businesses and including local musicians in their playlists. With the radio station reaching from Salinas all the way into Santa Cruz, KRML wants to give back to their community as well. Their online “Save 30” store hosts a surplus of discounted deals for local and independent businesses in the County. This includes food, merchandise, goods and everything else the peninsula has to offer.  You can listen in to KRML right inside the Carmel Fun App.
